I

scrutinize a number of large black and white photos strewn on the table in front of me. The photos show Indonesian parents and children, grandparents with grandchildren, old, young, wealthy and poor. They seem to be frozen in time looking at me. These were pictures of people whose names I have forgotten. These photos remind me of brief encounters that almost did not allow for conversation, or even introductions. Between them and myself, between the others and myself, reigned a world of difference, troubled only by a sense of déjà vu".

"What is left here are only memories of these people, their images that live on whether printed on paper, kept in archives or exhibited in a room. Looking at an image that knows no change, where time, light and space have been captured by camera is an activity that gives me peace. After being recorded in a photo, life seems to stop, allowing particular occurrences and moments to be appreciated and remembered".

umanity no longer has to pay heed to balance or dependence, or to the contrasts needed between the positive and negative. Humanity no longer needs to remember the thin similarities that are possible between language and pictures. And the young man returns to his early feeling, a feeling so similar to, but not precisely the same as, a broken heart. Maybe that’s what it feels like before he takes a journey with his camera. But this feeling, a kind of heart-break, the feeling when there isn’t a bridge between one side and the other, or when we know that the bridge is broken in the middle, doesn’t only arise in romantic love".

"That’s where he went with his camera, and that’s where he photographed family, family and family—something natural for many people, but not for him. It is a concept and an institution that hides an empty space for him, a gap that hasn’t been bridged throughout the story of his life".
